This is a Registered DIMM (RDIMM), the standard memory type for most rack and tower servers. A register on the module buffers the address and command signals before they reach the DRAM chips, which reduces electrical load on the memory bus and lets a system run more modules, or higher-capacity ones, than unbuffered desktop memory could support. RDIMM is generally the simplest and most cost-effective option for typical server builds — dual-socket hosts, general virtualization, file and application servers — and is usually favoured over LRDIMM unless a server needs to be populated at very high total capacity with many DIMMs per channel, where LRDIMM’s extra buffering becomes worthwhile.
It’s rated at DDR4-2933 (PC4-23400) with ECC. Actual operating speed is set by the platform: a server’s CPU and motherboard cap the effective memory speed regardless of what the DIMM is rated for, and speed also typically steps down as more DIMMs are added per channel, so it’s worth checking the target server’s supported memory speed before buying. ECC lets the module correct single-bit errors automatically, which is why it’s specified for essentially all business server deployments rather than the non-ECC memory used in consumer PCs.
