The Xeon Gold 6242R is a 2nd Generation “Cascade Lake Refresh” Xeon Scalable processor with 20 cores, 40 threads, 35.75MB of cache, and a 3.1GHz base clock that turbos to 4.1GHz. It supports six-channel DDR4-2933 memory and is built for dual-socket (2P) servers on the LGA3647 platform. The higher base and turbo clocks relative to its 24-core sibling (the 6248R) make it a good fit for workloads sensitive to per-core performance, such as database engines, latency-sensitive applications, and virtualization hosts running fewer but more demanding VMs.
Compared with the 24-core 6248R, the 6242R trades four cores for meaningfully higher clock speed at the same 205W TDP — a straightforward core-count-versus-clock tradeoff. Choose the 6242R when workloads don’t scale well across many threads and would rather have faster individual cores; choose the 6248R when the workload is highly parallel and total throughput across many threads matters more than single-thread speed.
