The DL380 Gen10 is HPE’s 2U workhorse and, on the same Xeon Silver 4208 platform as the DL360 Gen10 in this range, the key difference is headroom rather than raw compute. Its chassis supports far more PCIe expansion and, notably, the 8-bay SFF backplane can be field-upgraded to 16 or 24 SFF bays by adding drive cages — something not possible on the 1U DL360. That makes it the right choice for file/storage servers, database servers with growing datasets, backup targets, or virtualization hosts that may need more local drives, additional HBAs/NICs, or a GPU down the line.
The tradeoff is rack space: a DL380 takes 2U where a DL360 takes 1U, so in a space- or power-constrained environment where storage needs are fixed and modest, the DL360 is the more efficient use of the rack. But for buyers who value flexibility — the ability to add drives, cards, or accelerators without a full server replacement — the DL380’s extra internal room and larger, more efficient 2U cooling make it the safer long-term investment.
